American artist Kathy Cousart’s natural style is very suitable to plein air painting, and regardless of whether the artist is actually painting en plein air, or working in her studio from a reference photograph, she remains true to her stylistic inclinations.

Cousart’s blog paintings are wonderful depictions of still life, some animals, and some truly beautiful landscape paintings.

It is the landscape work that particularly appeals in my opinion.Kathy Painting 2

Cousarts paintings of waterways, hills, forests and even golf courses have real charm.

The brushwork is expressive, and you get the sense that the artist is working skilfully to reduce the clutter and detail of a scene down to its real values of shape, colour, highlight and shadow. It’s a minimalistic approach that captures the essence of each scene the artist paints admirably.

Cousart’s oil painting technique allows the brushstrokes to form part of a painting’s texture, and this technique works really well in some of her waterways paintings.

‘Designer Water’, and ‘Crash and Splash’ are fine examples of Cousart’s ability to bring water alive with just a few strokes of carefully chosen colour and brushstroke direction.

A favourite painting for me is ‘Co-Captain.’

Cousart’s blog is written in a genuinely engaging style; there is plenty of artist insight included below each painting. The layout is tidy, and the clutter of the side panel kept well away from the art on display. The information listed under each tab across the header of the blog is useful to visitors.
