Tulips are beautiful and fun to paint but they can get to dancing and moving on you as you are trying to paint them. They change so fast and I always love the challenge of that. Loved the color of these and wanted to try out the new fabulous linen board that Nancy Franke had given me. (Love it and will be ordering some- Thanks Friend!!) I always love painting in a square format and find it a fresh, edgy and interesting. I had some linen fabrics to help soften the foreground and background to let those tulips be the star.
As for the tulips…I think red ones are harder to paint then my favorite white ones. Jim Richards would disagree on that! I paint with a limited palette and had to really work to get that color just right. Jim and I talked about the correct color and value for light and shadow and that helped. Favorite thing now is having the best time ever with edges. I will paint the whole painting just to get to have fun with that. I look at where I can pull or push some paint and create interesting drama or where there might be that awesome lost edge.
I had a blast painting Tulips Square Dance and love the timeless feel of this one. Anyone else feel like dancing?!

Gros bisous

love the abstract shapes in this Kathy! The reds really glow against the soft greens.

I will free with you that red tulips are harder! And they were painted with such confidence! I don’t know what reds you’re using, but I’ll tell you that other than plein air, I have, in my arsenal, some spectacular reds (Perylene is one, quinacridone is another) and I JUST got two new reds from Holbein (China Red and Peony). Of course now I’m painting mostly water and skies, so they sit … unopened… I will update you on their lusciousness! This painting is gorgeous!

This is so beautiful and you named it just right. Because the reds look like they are dancing also. Love it!!!

I love to dance! And can totally see your playfulness in the edges. Great job! Curious: what music were you listening to?

Nothing like a painting with some red….and that’s a luscious shade of red! Just right. I lke it so much. i think that, for me, no painting is complete without a bit of red somewhere. it always draws my eye.
