I would love to own a Flower Shop of my own and if it happened to be in France that would just be over the top! I loved this scene but knew it would be a tough one to paint! It was very complicated but “playing up” is my favorite way to learn!
Adore awnings and got the drawing and perspective like a champ! I was tickled when my mentor teacher Jim Richards said it was my best drawing/sketch ever! Nothing like starting out on a high note! The biggest concept I think about when I paint is light and shadow. I loved the beautiful flowers and kept wanting to put them lighter as if they were in sunlight. Well, that gorgeous awning protects them and they are shaded. So, that meant my darks could hold it all together and some of the pots needed a variety of saturated colors to read as the tops of the flowers. Love learning from Jim and that light and dark concept dates all the way back to how Rembrandt loved to paint. I am a lucky girl!
I worked on this all day one day at school and again a full day at home. Finished it up and was very proud of the beautiful patron in soft gray just looking over all the flowers. When I took it back to school it was so fun that Jim and several others thought that the patron looked like the fabulous artist Lori Putnam! Must have been channeling some of my attempts at a painting of Lori from last week. (That’s another story for another post one day!)
This painting is just so much prettier in person…Usually don’t say that but sometimes photos just don’t do a painting justice. I will take some more photos and get some close ups. Love this French Flower Shop and would love to see it go to a flower loving home!
