Man’s Best Friend
8 x 10 Oil on Canvas
NFS

This was the first of this style of portrait painting that I tried.  I was looking for a nice face and wanted someone I did not know.  Happened upon this one on a friend’s blog and just loved the light and shadow- can’t resist a dog either for my challenge.  I had drawn all this out a few times in thumbnails and then sketched it out on my canvas.  Jim Richards came over and taught me how to build the face by just painting the shapes and in the end the face emerges.  Totally fascinating.  Jim really did most of this wonderful face and I was proud that I tackled the dog.   I paint pretty loose naturally so this style seems to suit me.  I decided to give it to my friend and then had that nervous hope that it would look like her husband whom I had never met.  Apparently it does and I hope the dog enjoys it too!  So much fun to paint.  In case anyone is curious- Kelley MacDonald’s Tim and Paco.

I had the chance to see some special friends who were pretty close by.  Made my way over to Hilton Head at the last minute to see Kelley MacDonald and we took a short road trip to see Sandra Baggette and Jerry Stocks whom we had met at a different workshop.  Kelley was attending the Karin Jurick workshop and I got to see Karin for a bit and heard how fabulous this year’s workshop was.  I know last years was amazing.  I also got to meet “the” Linda Popple- funniest artist I have ever met!  Saw several more old friends and met some new friends also.  That is what is so special about this art world- getting to know folks with common interests through workshops and blogging.  I treasure those friendships and appreciate the opportunity to stay in touch.
