36 x 36 Oil with Acrylic

I am loving texturing and layering with acrylics and glazes and then coming back in with some gorgeous oil paints on top. I am combining the best of both worlds and love that. This painting is just pure intuitive mark making and joy and I hope that comes across. That is what saying something with paint is all about for me- that connection. Thanks Y’all!

This painting is really special starting out with some of my favorite things. My parents have always loved the ocean and had a beautiful collection of shells large and small. I asked my Mom if I could “borrow” a few of her remaining shells to paint and being the nicest person I have ever known she was happy for me to use them in a painting. They say that when you get older and get severe dementia that your true character comes out and my Mom remains the kindest person that I have ever met. I am learning a lot from her.

The painting is also really special because it’s joyful and showing the direction that painting freely and from the heart can be and where I want to go. I have had some of the best teachers along the way and have worked extremely hard getting and understanding those all important fundamentals- the “How” to paint. Coming from my collegiate golf coaching background I knew I wanted a solid foundation. I have been lucky enough to mentor under amazing artist Jim Richards for 4 years now and he has patiently taught and gently guided me to this point.

As I narrow down my “What” I love and want to paint (from everything under the sun because I love the learning part) to what truly calls to me to paint it, I can begin to see where my heart truly lies. All that being said, I come to the reason that I paint- My “Why.” I have been saying for years that painting has saved me and has been my happy place. I am learning it’s where I can go to say something with paint that I maybe can’t say any other way. I am so thankful to have that. Caring for both of our Moms has been extremely difficult at times and is a sad long goodbye. I am so blessed to be able to help care for them but recognize the toll that it can take also. A huge part of “Why” I paint is to share that feeling and peace that I get from painting with others. There is nothing better than connecting and knowing that I put a little piece of my heart into a painting and it shows. I want to continue learning more about the intuitive part of painting and tap into my abstract tendencies and explore that.

I look forward to carrying on my Traditional Southern Impressionist with an Abstract Edge and seeing where this painting journey takes me. I am so honored to be in Tyler White/O’Brien Gallery and am delivering paintings on my way to the workshop on Sunday! I sure do appreciate all the love and support I feel along the way. Thanks Y’all!

I am all about the journey and the learning process and always love to fill in and round out my art repertoire’ so lately have had fun taking a walk on the abstract side. I have such an appreciation for beautiful art and all kinds across the board and it’s fun to learn about them. I have studied extremely hard these last few years to have that good foundation of the fundamentals and feel free to just explore with confidence now.

Have always painted loose and love fresh clean brush/knife work and have been working on visual concepts and painting more expressively. All of this leads me to a fun one day painting workshop with the fabulously talented Melissa Payne Baker. Melissa is an award winning artist and just a wonderfully sweet teacher and we all had a blast. I had never painted with acrylics before and quickly learned amazing tips to work the paint, much like my beloved oil paints! I could still mix my own colors and had fun just seeing shapes and getting pretty abstract for me. I have been leaving some charcoal marks showing on my oil paintings and found I liked that also with the acrylics…just the graphite calligraphy marks pleased my eye. Palette knife painting is fun and scraping can create some gorgeous edges!

Acrylics are a whole new fun ball game! They dry faster but you can use that to your advantage and layer or just work in stages. It was a fun creative day and I loved learning a whole new way to express what I want to say with paint. Please check out Melissa’s gorgeous paintings and give yourself a day to just be creative and have fun! I just added a new category on my Website/Blog called Abstracts and hope they please y’all too!
