Love this painting- had more fun painting those silly but awesome cotton bolls than you can believe. You notice they got top billing in the title! If you can’t see them good, please click on the title or just the photo to get the fuller photo of them. I just broke them down into simple shapes and had a blast. Really watched the values and the temperatures. Gotta say I loved painting them and have more to come. I know everyone will want to know where I got them from. I live in Athens, Georgia, out in Oconee County and we have gorgeous farms with crops and animals in all directions not 10 minutes from me. I happened upon this field after a day of plein air painting out in the country and just had to “borrow” a few branches. It was pouring down rain, the field was muddy and I was in a hurry if you know what I mean!
So enough already about those silly but awesome cotton bolls…the hydrangeas and tulips are not to shabby either. I got some gorgeous blue ones to give them a try and liked seeing the different light and shadow colors in them. I struggled just a bit with the form of the tulips (and was all about the cotton bolls anyway) and Jim Richards came in with some simple strokes to make them read better. This was a fun painting and I think it turned out really wonderful.
I hope y’all like my cotton bolls as much as I do- I am thinking a Southern Series is up for consideration- I already have one done! Can’t get much more Southern than hydrangeas and cotton! Ya reckon?!
